Development and School Enrichment
|
Development encompasses the fundraising and marketing activities that the school carries out. Most independent schools receive a portion of their annual operating budget from tax
deductible donations and other fundraising activities. Neskowin Valley School is classified by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c) 3 non profit.
Tuition covers approximately 60% of the operating budget at NVS. The remaining amount is generated through various fundraising activities. NVS has a long tradition of keeping tuition as
affordable as possible—our tuition is consistently 1/3 to 1/2 of the typical independent school’s tuition; therefore, it is essential that parents participate in fundraising activities.
The following is a description of our primary methods of fundraising:
Annual Fund
The annual fund consists of donations from parents, trustees, and friends of the school. The tuition you pay to send your child to NVS covers approximately 60% of the actual cost of
his/her education. This means that, in essence, EVERY child receives financial aid, even those families paying full tuition. Early in the fall a fundraising letter is mailed to all individuals on our
mailing list. The gifts we receive range in size from $5 to $1,000 or more. It is our goal to have 100% parent participation. This can be paid in one lump sum, or as many of our parents do,
you can arrange to pay an amount decided upon by you on a monthly or quarterly basis. Foundations are more willing to award grants to schools when they see a strong commitment from
parents as reflected by their participation in the Annual Fund.
Harvest Festival
Harvest Festival is an important annual celebration and fundraising event planned by the parents and staff. Harvest Festival will include a silent auction, wine auction, quilt raffle, arts and
crafts vendors, music, entertainment, and food. Parents plan and organize Harvest Festival. In addition to planning, parents staff the event, help with set-up and clean–up, and bake for the
bakery/cafe.
Annual Raffle
The Annual Raffle is another important fundraiser that requires full parent participation. A limited number of tickets are sold for vacation packages or a vehicle. We count on parents to sell
raffle tickets and help with publicity. This is our largest fundraiser.
Foundations/Grants
Many federal, state, and private foundations give money to non-profit organizations in the form of grants. The organization must write a proposal for a specific need or project. The school
has been the recipient of grants from numerous foundations over the years. Should you be associated with a foundation that might consider a proposal from the school, please let us know.
Echo/Gather'Round Newsletter
This publication features information about the school's curriculum, classroom activities, alumni, and fundraising efforts and is published and mailed out twice a year. (see publications)
