History and Philosophy

Neskowin Valley School was founded in 1972 by George and Margot Thompson. The school began as a Preschool/Kindergarten, later expanding to a preschool through 8th-grade elementary school. Students attend NVS from Tillamook and Lincoln counties, in the past coming from as far north as Bay City, as far south as Newport and as far east as Sheridan.

The school building, once a 1940’s dairy barn, reminds people of a large, one-room schoolhouse, with a central fireplace and classrooms radiating away from its center. Following the early years' tradition, our students come together weekly for Gather' Round, singing folk songs and American ballads from the traditional NVS Songbook. A large Artspace is the setting for classes in music, choir, drama, and visual art.

The setting, on five acres surrounded by creeks, meadows, and woods, inspires NVS teachers to impart the lessons of nature, including diversity, regeneration, abundance, and balance. A school garden provides space for Garden & Grounds classes, and a covered play area allows outdoor recess time regardless of the weather. The school, since 1972 has opened its doors to people from all walks of life. Countless visitors say, “I wish I had gone to a school like this!”
