Thematic Studies | Integrated Curriculum
Neskowin Valley School bases its curriculum on a three-year rotation of school-wide studies. This assures that major content areas in science and social studies are addressed at each level and built on in later years. As themes repeat in subsequent years, teachers select topics that build on rather than duplicate prior learning. With school-wide themes, teachers can facilitate cross-grade conversations that deepen students’ understanding. At the same time, core areas of literacy, mathematics, the arts, and earth awareness and stewardship provide the tools and cognitive development which carry the thematic content studies.
Topics are selected with consideration of the Oregon Common Core State Standards and the National Standards published by MCREL (Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning). In 2017, NVS adopted the Core Knowledge Curriculum as a guide for student instruction as it aligns with the three-year rotation of study.
