Raven’s Call- September Newsletter
The rafters ring with the voices and laughter of students, families, and staff. From our first gatherings to the Back to School Family BBQ, the start of this year at Neskowin Valley School has been filled with connection, joy, and the promise of new adventures.
The NVS Way
I have read umpteen articles on the dangers of multitasking, and yet, if I had a nickel for every time that I multitasked, I would be a rich woman. I check my phone while working; I clean and listen to podcasts; I go for a walk while answering work emails. I buy into the idea that my worth is based on my productivity, and multitask accordingly.
The Myth of Multitasking
I have read umpteen articles on the dangers of multitasking, and yet, if I had a nickel for every time that I multitasked, I would be a rich woman. I check my phone while working; I clean and listen to podcasts; I go for a walk while answering work emails. I buy into the idea that my worth is based on my productivity, and multitask accordingly.
But science is clear. Multitasking is a myth, and it is not good for our brains.
Three Powerful Phrases
I looked over at my student. “Here we go again,” I thought. Mark, neurodivergent, brilliant, and seemingly defiant, was staring at the graphic organizer. He slouched lower on the green bench seat, arms crossed, every bit of his body saying to me, “There is no way I’m going to do this.” He and I were in an all-too-familiar place. The battle royale is about to commence.
2025 Annual Report
The 2024–25 academic year at Neskowin Valley School is best summed up in three small but powerful words: growth, innovation, and anchoring. Every day was seen as an opportunity not only to learn something new but to build skills, strengthen friendships, and take an active role in shaping both personal and collective success.

As our resident ravens soar and the swallows join them in the skies, the earth below is coming alive—tender green leaves and new shoots peeking from the ground. And just like nature, we at NVS are bursting at the seams with growth of our own!
To celebrate Earth Week, our middle and upper school students joined forces with our new partners at the Cascade Head Biosphere for a “raindrop to sea” exploration. This exciting partnership is just beginning—with more experiences to come, including upcoming visits with Westwind to deepen our commitment to environmental stewardship.
Be sure to visit the Partners page on our website to see our community collaborations bloom and grow!

Alumni Spotlight | Erica Morgan
For generations, the playground at Neskowin Valley School (NVS) has been a place where children learned to take risks, build confidence, and create lifelong memories. For Erica Morgan, an NVS alum, those early experiences shaped the foundation of her resilience, leadership, and career. Erica was always more confident outside of the classroom, from playing outside to dance class. Her resiliency and inquisitive nature were nurtured by her teachers at NVS and helped her transition from the Oregon Coast to Maryland in middle school. The supportive environment at NVS instilled in her a lifelong passion for exploration and learning, values that her parents, Richie and Lovetta Morgan, sought when they chose the school for their three children.

Our resident raven family has grown from two to three! We usually see our two adult ravens daily, and now it looks like they have a juvenile who has decided to stay. Just as they have opened their hearts to one more, we are opening our hearts in a big way as well! How, you ask?
